Nanosolar has a manufacturing facility churning out flexible solar cells on aluminum foil.  They claim they could produce electricity at five to six cents per kilowatt hour, which is 3-4 times less expensive than current methods.  This brings solar cells electricity generation down to the same cost as coal.    Now why hasn’t this gotten the attention of the US government..?

Apparently new research suggests factors such as the softness of a food can have a significant impact on the ability of the body to convert the stored energy.  For example, two sets of rats fed the exact same calorie content, but one set was fed hard food, the other soft.  The rats receiving the softer food were significantly overweight compared do the other group.  Check out this fantastic read if you are watching what you eat:

A first of it’s kind, the superconducting plasma drive underwent successful initial tests.  In about a week a full-output test will be conducted.  This new engine will provide enough power to go on deep-space missions and at a fraction of the payload.

The international Space Station is the first hop / node in space to use the new Interplanetary Internet.  This first iteration has certain hours that it can be used, so it still has some growth, but at least it’s the first step in expanding out reach.  It uses Delay-Tolerant-Networking (DTN) to send the data instead of our standard TCP/IP, since it’s likely there data will come in waves and perhaps out of order.    The main difference with DTN is the node will store all information it receives until it finds another node to send the data.   The reason for this is a NAK (not acknowledged) message could delay transmissions for days, so a new method was needed.  http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17416-interplanetary-internet-gets-permanent-home-in-space.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=online-news

Protesters are taking over the streets of Tehran after Ahmedinejad was declared winner of yesterday’s election.  His rival candidate was expected to win by a 2:1 majority, and is mostly responsible for an 80% increase in record turnout.  The public is taking to the streets in a big way…
Public phone and SMS networks between Tehran and the rest of the world have been cut off, at the same time opposition political leaders started getting arrested.  Western news agencies have had their equipment seized and are resulting to cell phones and twitter to try and get information out.  I find this video from a few hours ago both scary and hopeful at the same time.  You can clearly see the Iranian police and Military Guard running away from the approacing crowd, before long the street is full of protestors.  I believe I read (no verification) that they are chanting ‘death to the dictator’…I hope when the dust settles things over there are better instead of worse off:

You got to hear this to believe it.  I DO hear a delay at the very end (the intro says no effects) and I don’t see any mouth movement, but heck it’s pretty darn good anyway.
